Abstract

Prepared withinin the framework of the Caribbean Regional Consultation on the UNESCO MOST Programme, the purpose of the paper is to suggest subject areas of research for coping with global change in its economic, technological and environmental dimensions. After discussing alternative ways of delimiting the Caribbean region, the paper identifies its main characteristics and discusses some implications of global change for economic growth and the human development. Coping responses should be proactive and strategic; as shown by the challenges of competitiveness, ICTs, and environmental imperative of sustainability. Seven cross-cutting areas of action and related policy research are proposed for the region.
