Scramble for Africa: From Berlin 1884 to London 2011, Brian Becker

The leaders of 14 capitalist powers in Europe plus the United States met for a conference in Berlin 126 years ago to decide how all of Africa’s land and vast resources would be divided as colonies and zones of control among themselves. No Africans were invited to the conference…One cannot help but think about the Berlin Conference of 1884 when analyzing the London Conference of 2011 that took place on March 29. It was convened by the same imperialist governments that took part in the 1884 meeting. Africans were invited this time, but the African Union refused to attend…

Historical Amnesia in the International Media about Haiti

News from Haiti in the past two months has focused dominantly on the return of two mythical figures: former “President for Life” Jean-Claude Duvalier and former democratically-elected president Jean-Bertand Aristide. Duvalier’s mythification remains irrefutably decoded since his departure to France aboard a US plane in 1986-…
The mass media has also reached consensus on the myth of Aristide, though one in which a large degree of spectacle remains…

Libya: The Other Side of the Story, Russell Bell

Not many of us in the Caribbean realize that the West has released a carefully planned series of lies through their media agents to get the people of the world in a state of mind that would make them support the invasion of one of Africa’s success stories - as was done to legitimize the invasion of Iraq. As more information is made available, however, and the real objective of the west becomes clearer, a different picture is emerging. Attached is a very informative article which, I think, explains what is really happening in Libya and which I think you will find very enlightening.

Help in spreading the truth about Gaddafi and Libya. The highlights and pictures were inserted into the original article being distributed by the Pan African Research and Documentation Project.

Two weeks ago, Joseph Stiglitz, the American economist and 2001 Nobel Laureate for economics, posted a ground-breaking article, “The Mauritius Miracle”..,But Mauritius’ stunning achievements in the areas of socio-economic development and democratic governance have, most astonishingly, attracted virtually no international attention or comment - not by the world’s media; not by the international community; not by the multilateral and bilateral organizations.  not by mainstream academics…

Statement on erroneous report on OAS appointment, Norman Girvan

Friends and colleagues–an erroneous report is circulating to the effect that I have been appointed the OAS Secretary General’s Special Representative on the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy. This is incorrect. The only appointment that I have on this subject is with the UN. The source of this report appears to be an item from the Jamaica Information Service. I have brought this to the attention of the JIS (and the Jamaica Observer newspaper, which picked it up) and hope they will rectify it.

Thanks, Norman

The Planning Institute of Jamaica has just published A Growth-Inducement Strategy for Jamaica in the Short- and Medium-Term, which had inputs from a large number of stakeholders from the public and private sectors, NGOs and community-based organisations. This is a welcome development and we hope that there will be a liveley debate on the strategy as the PIOJ moves forward with implementation. Some preliminary comments are posted below and we invite readers to join the exchange.

NOT ONE DROP OF BLOOD
Over the past week a renewed energy has begun to stir among the people of Jamaica. We have faced the big blue Fire that has been slowly growing since independence- ‘Choice’. Many of us have ignored the full range of choices available to us. These choices have always been there, including the choice to engage in revolution…
