The passing of Professor Barry Chevannes, outstanding Caribbean anthropologist, leading scholar of Rastafari, artiste and social activist, has elicited an outpouring of tributes from all quarters in his native Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.


It is now time for the second generation of Caribbean thinkers to come forward and continue the tradition of independent thinking and theorising in the region. We have lost a few Caribbean juggernauts this year Rex Nettleford, Dennis Pantin and now Barry Chevannes. The sad thing is that most of the population has no idea of the solid contribution that these men have made to our societies.
