‘Home Grown Solutions and Ownership’ in Development

Prepared for OECD Development Forum Informal Experts’ Workshop on ‘Ownership in Practice’ Paris, September 27-28, 2007’,

Northern domination of the development knowledge industry fundamentally contradicts ‘home-grown solutions and ownership’. Home-grown solutions must mean local generation of knowledge and of policy interventions that are specific to the local environment and acceptance of, and commitment to, responsibility for implementation. Development should be oriented to this model. To this end, concrete proposals are put forward.

  1. Very interesting insight and methodology on getting home grown solutions. I was really elated with the concise and practical suggestions.

  2. Given the situation in the South which diverse and varies among different contexts, ‘home grown solution and ownership’ is an interesting breakthrough towards a local-based and local-oriented development. It will also challenge the mainstream approach of single package of knowledge and policy intervention in the name of development from the North which is injected into the South without considering their specific needs and circumstances.
