Raw Deal: The EU’s unfair trade agreements with Mexico and South Africa - a new report by the World Development Movement This new report presents evidence from existing EU trade deals with South Africa and Mexico showing how they have hindered rather than helped development. Looking at examples in agriculture, industrial products and services, the report shows how the reality of these bilateral deals is far removed from the ‘win-win’ rhetoric. For example in South Africa, and other countries in the South African Customs Union, cheaper European goods have undermined local industries and reduced government revenue. And in Mexico, the liberalisation of financial services has allowed a handful of European banks to dominate the sector while small and medium businesses have lost access to credit. The conclusion of the report for countries currently conducting EPA or free trade negotiations? Beware bilateral deals with the EU!
